Believing that “together we grow,” Hope Center addresses issues of housing and food insecurity by engaging with its downtown Seattle neighborhood to provide healthy food, informative programs, and a space for the work of Mary's Place Day Center.
The Hope Center Story
Organized in 2011, the Hope Center builds on more than fifty years of community services offered by Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
From 2012–2025, this was the home of the Women’s Day Center of Mary’s Place. When renovations at Ninth and Stewart were completed in 2012, the Hope Center began operations as a nonsectarian nonprofit located at 1830 Ninth Avenue — hosting Mary’s Place Day Center and continuing services previously offered as Gethsemane Community Services and the Saturday meal program, Soup & Movies. In response to shifting needs and resources, in September 2016 the Hope Center ended its own programming and provided additional space and time for the expanding needs of Mary’s Place Day Center.
Beyond serving as landlord to the remarkable work of Mary’s Place during those years, the Hope Center continues to build neighborhood partnerships to address needs related to food and housing insecurity. With its host congregation, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, the Hope Center invites people of all faiths or no faith to work — neighbor to neighbor — on projects that make the world a more compassionate place for all.
